چکیده

The performance of twelve biofilters with three different residence times (approximately 4 s, 7 s, and 13 s) was measured on a dairy, swine, and poultry facility. Odor and hydrogen sulfide reduction improved from 56% to 94% as residence times increased from 4 s to 7 s for the dairy and swine. Percent reduction remained above 89% as residence time increased from 7 s to 13 s on the dairy and swine. A 5 s residence time is recommended for designing biofilters on swine and dairy facilities to acheive more than 80% reduction in emissions. The biofilter on the poultry facility was installed without a dust filter and dust on the fans prevented accurate airflow measurement. Reductions were less than 40% on the poultry. Biofilters on poultry facilities are not recommended without dust removal.

Odor and Odorous Chemical Emissions from Animal Buildings: Part 4- Correlations between Sensory and Chemical Measurements

This study supplemented the National Air Emissions Monitoring Study (NAEMS) by making comprehensive measurements, over a full calendar year, of odor emissions from five swine and four dairy rooms/buildings (subset of the total number of buildings monitored for the NAEMS project). The measurements made in this project included both standard human sensory measurements using dynamic forced-choice ...

Odor and Odorous Chemical Emissions from Animal Buildings: Part 2- Odor Emissions

This study was an add-on project to the National Air Emissions Monitoring Study (NAEMS) and focused on comprehensive measurement of odor emissions. Odor emissions from two animal species (dairy and swine) from four sites with nine barns/rooms (two dairy barns in Wisconsin, two dairy barns and two swine rooms in Indiana, and three swine barns in Iowa) during four cycles (13-week periods) were me...

Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Livestock and Poultry

In 2008 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that only 6.4% of U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions originated from agriculture. Of this amount, 53.5% comes from animal agriculture. Agricultural activities are the largest source of N2O emissions in the U.S. accounting for 69% of the total N2O emissions for 2009. In animal agriculture, the greatest contributor to methane emissions ...

Geographical variation in antibiotic resistance profiles of Escherichia coli isolated from swine, poultry, beef and dairy cattle farm water retention ponds in Florida.

AIMS The aim of this study was to assess geographical variation in multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) profiles of livestock Escherichia coli as well as to evaluate the ability of MAR profiles to differentiate sources of faecal pollution. METHODS AND RESULTS More than 2000 E. coli isolates were collected from water retention ponds and manure of swine, poultry, beef and dairy farms in south, ...

A comparative study of the effect of compost/woodchips mixture, natural zeolite and zeolite/activated carbon mixture as packing materials on the biofilter performance

Formaldehyde is a dangerous compound that must eliminate from contaminated air. Different methods exist for removal of pollutants from the air that among them, the biological processes attracted a great deal of attention. Removal of formaldehyde from the contaminated air was investigated in three laboratory-scale biofilters packed with different materials (a mixture of compost and woodchips, th...
